The court has approved arrest warrants for 36 red-shirt leaders and other supporters accused of attacking the motorcade of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and causing unrest at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort hotel in Pattaya that forced the cancellation of the Asean summit, Police Region 2 Deputy Commissioner Pramote Prathumwong said on Thursday.

The warrants were for 12 people who allegedly participated in the smashing of the back window of the SUV carrying Mr Abhisit as he was leaving a cabinet meeting in Pattaya last week, he said.

Other warrants were for 14 red-shirt leaders and followers who caused the cancellation of the Asean summit. They include former Thai Rak Thai MP Arisman Pongruangrong, who has already been charged over the invasion of the Royal Cliff Beach hotel, and Nisit Sinthuprai.

Warrants were also issued for 10 red-shirt members who allegedly attacked Mr Abhisit's car and that of PM's secretary-general Nibhon Phromphan at the Interior Ministry on Sunday.

The attack came right after Mr Abhisit announced a state of emergency in Bangkok.

Mr Abhisit narrowly escaped the protesters, who stormed the ministry where he had just addressed the nation on television.
