Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban on Tuesday criticised the opposition Puea Thai party of trying to save exiled former premier Thaksin Shinawatra by asking authorities to grant amnesty to people who have been banned from politics as well as core members of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD).

According to Mr Suthep, it is normal for inmates to wish for a reduced time in jail and this can be applied to ex-politicians who want to play politics shortly.

He blamed the opposition members for trying to save themselves rather than thinking about the country, adding that both the Puea Thai party and the Democracy Television (DTV) are all under Mr Thaksin.

As for the anti-Thaksin PAD, Mr Suthep told the reporters to ask its leaders themselves.

The deputy premier said he is not worried about the Puea Thai's plan to allow Shinawatra family members to oversee MPs in different regions, and it would not affect the Democrat's voter base in the North
